Quote raving: wanna...that is heart breaking.....I still can't even begin to talk about the last two pets (dogs) that I lost. and they were 3 years and the other one was 14 years ago...still chokes me, so normally I stay out of these threads....but you are all much more brave and open than me.

I am not brave. I will NOT read the rainbow bridge. It tears me up just thinking about it. I got 2 new pups 2 months after my other 2 died. I just could not bare going home each day and no one there waiting and tails wagging for a hug. It was hard for me to bond with them and I didn't spend as much time loving on them at first. It was like I almost resented them as if they were trying to replace my others. Then one day they climbed up in my lap and just sat down like they belonged there. That was it for my heart. It is theirs now.

At my girl I have nows check up in October vet said she was overweight and wanted to do blood work. Her thyroid is too low. He gave her meds and she got her energy back and lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks. Vet says that is good. When he saw her last week for a checkup she was running a fever. He gave antibiotics and I took her today for recheck. Fever is down but blood work shows some kind of tick related infection. She has had frontline on all year. Vet called and hour ago and said for me to take her temp every day and he is giving me stronger antibiotics. It anything bad happens I will not make it.

Quote gommie: You guys are so kind, thanks so much! Lamar was a very special little man- they all are- I so wish they didn't have to leave us-I am a firm believer in clinging to anything that gives me comfort at times like this-I have a friend who had to get rid of everything that reminded her of her little doxie- I, on the other hand, cling to any reminders- we are all different and we grieve differently as well-I leave a little light on at night for Lamar still- crazy,probably-but it helps me sleep better knowing it is on--

This will be a very hard Christmas for you too Sunny. I am so sorry, but all you can do is grieve through it-

awww geeze gomme...ya got me...right in the ol heart....snif sniifff!.. he is adorable! and sounded like a real sweetheart!

thanks raving- he was our little heart dog-- so much character and personality, he could be mean as a striped snake with anyone (but me or dad)if you screwed with him -as long as you didn't invade his space he was your buddy--

Quote Sunnydaz:
Quote grits1976: My daughter's dog died today... she had liver damage and lost a lot if weight very rapidly. The only thing that I can think of is her heart worm meds got changed about the time she started to loose weight. But we didn't think much of it at the time b/c we went to a different brand of dog food at the same time that she nor my mom's dog ate real well, but Twinkie was obese, so we were glad she lost some weight. We went back to the brand they were eating and she still was loosing weight. So I think it was the meds, vet doesn't agree. I had to tell her after school today... It sucked.
I don't believe we need to immediately replace her I think we need to grieve a bit... My MIL doesn't agree and she breeds dogs I hope they don't give my kids a puppy for Christmas as ours was a little daschund and she raises bulldogs our fence needs to be fixed before we get anymore animals a tree fell on it during a storm, especially a large dog like that.

grits, i hope you dont mind me saying but i think its possible the vet is right...when Prince got sick (kidney failure) he started to lose weight also...i was doing the injections (dialosis) to try to keep him alive but he just kept losing weight....when i had to put him down last week the vet said he was emaciated....i looked it up on the internet and one of the symtoms of emaciation (extreme weight loss) was due to organ failure....i just wanted to let you know what i found out....sorry about your daughters doggy.

grits- I am very sorry I agree with you that you need to grieve-- who knows how long that will take- when we lost our first Cocker in 97 at the age of 14 -it was 5 years before we could even think about getting another dog-- I felt that I would be betraying Winston by bringing another pup home-- people were always advising me on what to do-- I did nothing-- 5 years after Win passed away a little Cocker we named Maddie needed rescuing and we brought her home- that was the beginning of my work in rescue- I would not have actively gone looking for her--but I could not turn my back on her either-

Find something that comforts you and hang onto during this very hard time-(((((((((huggs)))))))))))

He did more blood work today. He was only gonna check her temp and see if the antibiotics he already gave her had helped. He thought the fever she had might have been from a possible kidney infection as that is a side effect of the thyroid med. The word kidney scares me because of my last one so I asked him if he thought we should do complete blood work just to make sure her kidneys where ok. The previous blood work had been just for the thyroid. He called me tonight with the results and said he was glad that we did it cause her white blood count was high. He asked me if she had had many ticks this year because it appeared to be "leptoscarosis". That is supposed to be caused by rocky mountain spotted fever from tick. He had on record where she had been vacinated for that and he said she seemed too alert to have it as that makes dogs lethargic and non responsive. He said that there had not been many cases of lyme disease this year which is also ticks. I am not sure why it is showing up as tick related. She shivers a lot when she is sleeping and I have to cover her up even when it is 70 degrees in the house. He wants me to check her temp daily and if it spikes again he wants to see her and try a stonger antibiotic. When he called and said he found something I got sick to my stomach and tried to hand the phone to my husband but he wouldn't take it. I never really thought about a dog running a fever. It had been 104 and he said that was bad and we don't want to let it get back up there. Normal for a dog is 100.5 to 102. I can't even think about it without falling apart. It can not happen again.

The first time someone sent me the RB poem I could no more read it than the man in the moon---it still chokes me up--but you can visit the RB site without reading the poem- they have a great pet grief forum- I have very close friends still today whom I met in 97 when I was going there after we lost Winston-

She is on two 68mg of Baytril once per day. He said tonight to check her temp everyday and if it tries to spike again he will put her on a stronger antibiotic. I can't remember the name of it but it is one that is used for tick borne diseases. She will not eat at all except for the half slice of bread I wrap her thyroid med in. She will also take a milk bone but won't touch her normal food. I put some chicken noodle soup on her food and she ate the noodles off and left the food. It is the same food she has had all her life. I tried a different kind too and she wouldn't eat it. She is drinking tons of water, so much that she ends up spewing some out in the floor a few minutes later. She is just 3. That fast weight loss is really scary. You think it is good till you find out it is not always good. I have just got to push bad thoughts out of my mind.

Yes, you do-- try to think positively- she is young so she has that on her side-----when Lamar reached a really low point and would eat absolutely nothing I spoke to a woman who owns a natural health food store for animals..she suggested I try him on blanched pork-which I did - and he ate it pretty well for about a month---you might get a pound and blanch it and give it a try---another thing Lamar would eat is tripe- I think it was Ziwi Peak brand-- as yuck as it sounds it was also something Lamar would eat when nothing else appealed to him--I know you are worried sick-did your vet check her blood pressure?

When he called and said he found something I got sick to my stomach and tried to hand the phone to my husband but he wouldn't take it. I never really thought about a dog running a fever. It had been 104 and he said that was bad and we don't want to let it get back up there. Normal for a dog is 100.5 to 102. I can't even think about it without falling apart. It can not happen again.

Yeah 104 is very high for a dog-- is she eating and drinking? this makes me sick at heart for you and her..what antibiotic is she on now?

Thank you for being so understanding and caring.
