September 22 - September 26
Somebody slap me because this week was unbelievable - in a mostly good way! I won't say that all is well in Oakdale or that every storyline is amazing but, by and large, most of the storylines are coming together and I am loving how the writers are drawing all of the families into all of the storylines.
Ethan's storyline brought in all of the Snyder's and the Ryan's; the tainted jewelry storyline (I know, it's over) brought the Snyder's, Stewart's and Hughes' together and there is a love triangle that is probably going to tear at the family fabric of all three core families. As a soap opera lover, I am happy with that because for a long time the storylines with the different families were only effecting single families and sometimes only single family members. Having more than two people in jeopardy is what soaps are all about. So, on to the blog!
I. Love. Ethan's. Storyline. I know it could have involved even more people. I know in real life there would have been media and reporters all over the job site. I know all of this and still I'm perfectly happy with what happened to Ethan, how the problem was attacked, the emotional depth of reaction from everyone - parents to friends. What didn't I like about it? How Ethan being at risk brought Holden and Lily back together. On the plus side at least they are talking about their past and the issues they face rather than announcing their next engagement. On the negative side, I'm over Lily and Holden. I loved them together for a long time but Holden is as self-righteous as Jack and needs to be taken down a notch or twelve. Lily needs a man who will stand by her and support her, not tear her down and keep reminding her of all of those mistakes she has made. I'd rather see Lily with Mike (or newly un-dead Dusty!) than Holden at this point. And I'd rather see Holden take a short vacation. And then give his romance with Carly a chance to develop into a lasting relationship. Those two were hothothot this summer - and were a nice change for those of us who are tired of Jack/Carly and Holden/Lily.
On the subject of Jack and Carly, I know most of you disagree with me. I polled everyone last week about whether or not Jack and Carly should have another chance. Overwhelmingly, you all agreed that it is time for them to give in and admit their true feelings. More than 80% of you feel that way and even though I do love Jack and Carly, I'm over their romance. Jack is wonderful at the first blush of love but once that blush is gone, he reverts to his self-righteous Snyderness. And I can live without that. So can Carly. The poor woman has been through the wringer, mostly her own fault, it's true. Still, she deserves someone who won't hold the past over her head. Surprisingly, Holden didn't do that. Being Jack's cousin, he knows all about Carly but he didn't care. Now if that Holden could come back to Lily, I'd be all for it. But it seems he is only that way with Carly. So let's give Carly and Holden and chance!
I'll make this storyline quick: Aaron/Alison/Chris still make up the most boring love triangle ever. Chris and Alison are hot. Aaron and Alison are not. So drop the love triangle, break up this stupid marriage and put Alison and Chris together. It only makes sense.

And I am totally in love with Dusty. Again. Aahhhh…Dusty. Five o'clock shadow Dusty should never have been killed off and the fact that he faked his death to find Johnny and take on Craig? That opens up even more storyline possibilities. Kudos, writers! Oakdale just wasn't the same without Dusty in it.
The Bonnie/Vienna/Henry storyline is really fun to me. I like that Bonnie and Vienna are willing to help one another (case in point: escaping from the warehouse) but they still don't like one another. I can just see Bonnie throwing Vienna under a bus or Vienna having Bonnie arrested for something. Anything. Their verbal sparring is worth it. Having Henry caught in the middle is a fun addition, too. Why is it that these three have the best one-liners in all of Oakdale when everyone else is serious and boring? Adding criminal Derek to their mix was a stroke of genius as well. Derek is a bad boy but he has a heart and watching Bonnie fall for him has been a hoot. Especially with Vienna calling her on it every step of the way!
You know what I didn't like this week? Brad. Well, Brad and Katie. No, just Brad. I swear no one on the face of the earth is as dense as Brad. I liked the flirty Brad who made Katie fall for him. But he's just so stupid. He was raised with Jack. At what point did he really think Jack would take his money and say all was forgiven? At what point is he going to wake up and realize that money doesn't solve his problems and that he has to flippin' grow up? Yeesh! It's like he has ADHD or something. He can concentrate on Katie. He can concentrate on Liberty. He can concentrate on getting himself out of trouble. But he can make all of these areas of his life work together for the greater good. Having Jack get rid of evidence? Refusing to accept responsibility in Leo's 'accident'? These are the actions of a pre-adolescent not a 30-something year old man. Grow up, Brad!
That's it, folks! The week as I saw it in Oakdale. What did you think? Drop a line in comments and we'll dish a little bit more!
